CAVE BEARS @ DEEP THOUGHTS
friday the 13th of november, 2013
cave bears have been a maniacal, wonderfully evil, playfully genius abomination for about eight years. various incarnations of the group used to crash on my various couches and perform at the art space i helped run in portland. i never knew much about them except that they were a flavor of crazy i enjoyed, and that the two core members— carrie & nick— were hampshire college drop-outs like me.
last fall, i wasn’t really living anywhere and wound up staying at nick’s house for two weeks via the power of social media sending me there to sublet. on his bedroom wall was a collaged image of a bird that was synchronistic with a drawing i had made a few weeks earlier: a demonic, long-beaked bird with a drum. i had no idea what the meaning of the birds could be. all i knew was the bird on his wall definitely matched mine in form, and possessed the same strange spirit.
nick told me that carrie (now clarissa) made the collage years ago. i immediately asked for her number, knowing i needed to talk to her about this creature. nick said he didn’t have her number.
odd that you could be in a band with someone for eight years and not have her phone number.
at the time, i wasn’t sure if the two of them were still performing together, so i didn’t press the issue. i got clarissa’s number from another friend. within a few minutes of texting with her about demons i knew we had to meet up. i saw her on halloween in providence, then continued to chat manically about all sorts of things, eventually agreeing to perform with her as part of a cave bears set at nick’s record store in boston.
i won’t go into the rest of the story here. i don’t care to talk about why i was excited to ambush nick, gag him and scream in his face.
all i will say for now is: maybe this is the reason nick didn’t want to give me clarissa’s phone number. if he’s even a tenth as psychic as the women he surrounds himself with, he may have foreseen what would go down in the coming cave bears shows…this one, and the next at the elks lodge.
